New captions for the Vijay TV video

Not that I don't approve of the existing version with subtitles, but there are things I don't like about it. Like how it capitalizes "FREE", and adds details that are not being said at all (but true nevertheless). So, while the present version would serve well as a standalone promo video, it's not exactly great for linking up from within our site, methinks. I'd like a more honest translation that sticks to exactly what's being said. And one's that's complete. So I finally got down to work on something I've wanted to get done in a long time:

The captions start only after about half-a-minute, btw. The viewer can turn the captions on/off as well.

I never realized how long it takes. I thought 2-3 hours, but it would have taken about 10 in total, I think. I used Habib's unsubtitled version as base and added subtitles using Youtube Subtitler.

If you'd like to see any changes, you can edit the subtitles here:
http://payir-it.wikidot.com/DesathukkuVangaSubtitles
and I can then upload that as a new version of subtitles.

It's going take a few weeks for me to link up this new version from the Payir website, so will await feedback till then.

Social Entreprenuers

Fast Company has a nice list of a group of social entrepreneurs

Some interesting picks there - we could look around these list and see if we can start some dialogue with a few of them - especially if theirs and our ideas match.

I am thinking of better world books and 'room to Read' for now..

Online Micro Financing: www.kiva.org

I came across this organisation: http://www.kiva.org on PBS TV (in HD!).
The basic concept is: they are making micro financing available over the internet. The good part is they act as an agency to connect the people in developing nations (look at countries served at: http://www.kiva.org/about/partners) needing small loans with lenders in the developed nations. These are not the traditional money lending "lenders", but willing people with helping tendencies wishing to bring about a change in the life of poor people, with the convinience of the internet. The amazing fact is, the loan default rate so far is 0 (NIL) meaning all payments have been made 100% on time. So the borrowers make all efforts to repay back on time, and the organisations make sure that they lend only to the right and needy people.

This is a nice system, we can put to use for Payir. Please read about it and let me know your comments.

Panchayati Raj as the backbone of development for India

Hi,

http://www.rediff.com/money/2007/apr/11guest.htm
The author's ideas of what current day's Indian governance needs - excatly match with Payir's basic principles. Please read this article and post your comments. We can possibly contact the author M R Venkatesh at his email id: mrv1000@rediffmail.com and introduce him to Payir.
